Storytellers Throne

Barefoot Books is making it's way into FAO Shwartz New York, and have had this "Storytellers Throne" built especially for the store. My son is sure it's a design Roald Dahl left sketched in a notebook somewhere... September is nearing soon enough, so we are reading Matilda's Magic Finger  and I've promised to make a movie night with a dusty VHS of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka...I adore Tim Burton, and Johnny Depp has had his performances... but I know Dahl, and Burton's Depp, sir, is no Willy Wonka....

Now I've strayed from my original thoughts...which were of the fantastical Throne...  My son looks at the picture and asks, "Are you supposed to SIT on it???"  A resonable question from a seven year old child who has seen me perform, and read, many times....usually swooping around the room, sometimes sitting upon a high wooden stool, occasionally stradling a chair backward, but most often if I am to be still during a story it's comfortably seated in the middle of my humungous cushion on the floor with the children gathered around...   "What else could it be for?"  I respond...  "I think it'll make a great hat-rack" is his final answer.

Book It! Program

Posted by The Barefoot Storyteller at 10:24 PM on August 13, 2008 Comments comments (0)

I'm not the biggest fan of Pizza Hut, but they do have a reading incentive plan begining this October 1st. And anything that motivates a child to read is a good thing, right? I will be signing up a group of home-schooled children to participate in the program with me. Send me an email with "Book It! Program" as the subject if you are interested in being added to the list.

The BOOK IT!® National Reading Incentive Program was established to motivate children in grades K-6 to read more. This unique program is free to classrooms in public, private, and parochial schools and allows teachers to set goals that complement their reading curriculum and student's reading skills. The program provides teachers with tips, tools and free reading award certificates to keep reading motivation high.  www.bookitprogram.com

The Barefoot Storyteller gets a good review

Posted by The Barefoot Storyteller at 10:37 AM on April 07, 2008 Comments comments (0)
The Barefoot Storyteller got kudos upon the "Life's Journey in Words" blog. The review below can be found on the Showcase page there:

"I am so inspired by people who want to "pay it forward", I am inspired by people who come up with great concepts and ideas. I absolutely love when the passing of ideas involves changing children's lives in the long-run. The Barefoot Storyteller does just this. Based out of her home, this 39 year old mom has deversified herself by homeschooling children and yoga classes in the home, maintaining a blog or two, and workshops, classes, parties, and even book exchanges! Her concepts and ideas create an atmosphere of emotional and intellectual development. Reading stories infused with art, movement and music. She travels around instilling the love of stories to children, passing on the passion for stories and book reading. Going beyond storytelling, children use self expression by doing art projects, and movement is art in yoga. Older children from ages 12-16 years old can attend the five day workshop, upon completion of this five day workshop they will build up their skills so that those kids can go back out into the community and bring literacy to other children. I hope that you will visit her web-site, and be as inspired as I was and perhaps you can contact her, and start your own storytelling network too! Now that's paying it forward!"

Thanks! smile
