Barefoot Under the Storyteller Moon

art, theater, story & creativity

I am so very happy to be a long time participant in Maine Agriculture in the Classroom's Read ME program!  Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Week 2012 was March 12th - 16th, and  I came into classrooms sharing the book  Seed, Soil, Sun: Earth's Recipe for Food.

As part of the Agriculture in the Classroom program, Read "ME" Agriculture has reached almost 20,000 Maine students.  I was pleased to be a part of the program, and the celebration of Ag Week 2011.

Along with other volunteers, I read and gave books about agriculture to K – 4th Grade Classrooms across the state. We told the students about our farms, programs or connections to agriculture and left lessons and information for the teachers to use, all supplied by MAITC. Funding for this project is a direct result of the Maine agricultural specialty license plate and grants from USDA.

We all read a newly developed book on MAINE agriculture, called "Agriculture for ME" developed especially for the event in 2010, and this year classrooms also received workbooks with reproducible pages and many activities.

If you were one of the classrooms, homeschool groups, libraries, 4H clubs, or daycares that I read to, please take a moment to answer the survey at this link:  Your feedback will help me improve and expand my programs! I will be sharing the results with the Maine Department of Agriculture (Maine in the Classrooms, and the marketing department) as well as other organizations, libraries, and school departments.

Closely related to, but not part of the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Program, is my own program for visiting schools and groups with my presentation  "From the Ground Up"  which introduces people to the Maine resources I use in my art & businesses. From herbs to wool, and a whole lot in between! Many of these demonstrations include hands-on activities. (felting, paper making, herb planting, et cetera)
